Photography with a Normal Lens

  • by

I challenged myself to shoot with a normal lens sometime back and found it to be freeing. First, I only carried one lens, which lightened my load. A normal lens has a focal length of approximately 50 mm, if one is shooting with a crop sensor most 35mm lens will give you that effect. It provides a nice viewpoint when shooting urban and street photography because, the perspective captured in an image will be extremely true to life, as your eyes see it; therefore, placing the photographer in the scene as a witness capturing a decisive moment. “The 50-mm lens… is said to be the lens that best approximates human visual perspective. For example, the precision-lens manufacturer Zeiss states that its Planar 50-mm lens is “equal to the human eye.” Many artists have taken up 50-mm lenses to render ordinary, everyday experience. Yasujirō Ozu, whose films subtly depict the daily life of 1950s and 1960s Japan, used a 50-mm lens almost exclusively. The French humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson also used one. Underlying its popularity is a promise of shared perspective and common understanding.” (source: The Atlantic, 05/2018 – https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/05/how-the-50-mm-lens-became-normal/560276/)
